Clinic for Feline Lower Urinary Tract Problems
The Animal Ultrasound Clinic conducts a low-cost clinic by appointment for help in the diagnosis of causes of feline lower urinary tract disease (cystitis). This is available at the clinic in Salem, MA. Cost: $95.00 per individual. This includes the bladder scan and brief office visit. A completed Fax Referral Form with a summary of the clinical signs and urinalysis findings is required from your veterinarian. Please ask your vet to fax us a completed fax Referral Form and to please not fax the medical record. Eligibility: Felines, seven years or younger, with signs of lower urinary tract disease. Additional Information: Cats with lower urinary tract disease benefit greatly from the findings of a bladder sonogram. Most often, tiny calculi, "sand," are not visible radiographically, and because they gravitate to the dependent part of the bladder when the cat voids or when the cat is positioned for a cystocentesis. The urinalysis therefore does not detect their presence. Detection of calculi (as opposed to the detection of microscopic crystaluria, which is believed to be a normal finding in cat urine), is critical to the successful management of cystitis. Other structural lesions sometimes seen are tumors, a thickened bladder wall, diverticulae, repeated clot formation (e.g., cats with hemophilia), tumors (transitional cell carcinoma and lymphoma, especially), and bladder wall cysts. Only when these causes of bladder disease have been ruled out can a diagnosis of idiopathic sterile cystitis be suggested. Each of these bladder problems has a specific therapy.
